Tired and swollen legs from standing all day: what you can do from today
If you work as a cashier, nurse, pharmacist or in any role that keeps you on your feet for hours, you probably know the feeling well: legs that feel like lead when you get home, swollen ankles, a fatigue that goes beyond ordinary muscle tiredness. It is very common, it has a name — mild venous insufficiency or leg heaviness caused by venous stasis — and, above all, it has solutions.
In this article we explain what is actually happening in your legs after long hours on your feet, and what evidence-backed measures can make a real difference to your daily life.
Why legs swell after standing for long periods
Venous return — the journey of blood from the feet back to the heart — works against gravity. Under normal conditions, the contraction of the calf muscles acts as a pump and pushes blood upward. But when we stand for hours without moving much, that muscular pump works less efficiently, blood tends to pool in the leg veins and swelling, heaviness and, in many cases, pain or cramps appear.
In its early stages this is not a serious condition, but it is a signal that deserves attention. Over time, without preventive measures, it can progress towards varicose veins or more significant venous problems.
What you can do: 4 evidence-based measures
1. Compression stockings: the most evidence-backed measure
Compression stockings are the most scientifically supported resource for preventing and relieving leg heaviness and swelling in people who work on their feet. They exert a graduated pressure — greater at the ankle and decreasing as they go up — that facilitates venous return and reduces fluid accumulation in the tissues.
There are different compression levels (from 15-20 mmHg for preventive use to over 30 mmHg for medically diagnosed cases) and different formats: socks, knee-high stockings or thigh-high stockings. The key point that many people miss is when to put them on: they should be applied before getting out of bed, while the legs are still horizontal and gravity has not yet started to accumulate fluid. If you put them on while standing or after walking around for a while, they lose much of their effectiveness.
At the pharmacy we can guide you on which level and format best suits your situation.
2. Cold gel: immediate relief and venous return activation
A topical cold-effect gel is a fast and effective solution for the hours when symptoms arrive. The cold causes superficial vasoconstriction and activates venous tone, which improves blood return and relieves the sensation of heaviness almost immediately.
Application technique matters: always in an upward direction, from the foot towards the knee, following the natural path of venous return. Applying it downward not only fails to help but can actually hinder drainage.
3. Legs elevated when you get home
Simple and effective. Lying down for a few minutes with your legs raised above heart level helps drain the fluid accumulated during the day through the simple effect of gravity. You need no products or equipment — just a cushion under your feet or resting your legs against the wall. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to notice a difference.
Combined with a cold gel, this is one of the simplest and most accessible recovery routines you can add to your daily life.
4. Oral supplements with plant-based active ingredients
When symptoms are frequent or intense, oral supplements with venotonic action can provide important support. Horse chestnut, red vine, butcher's broom, ginkgo biloba and diosmin extracts are among the most studied active ingredients for their ability to improve venous wall tone, reduce capillary permeability and decrease inflammation.
Choosing the most appropriate supplement depends on each person's symptom profile, so the best approach is to ask at the pharmacy before starting any treatment on your own.
When to see a doctor
The measures above are suitable for functional heaviness and swelling caused by prolonged standing. However, there are signs that require medical assessment: swelling that does not improve with rest, visible varicose veins appearing, skin changes on the leg, intense pain or the sudden appearance of a red, warm area. In those cases, a doctor can rule out more significant venous disease and guide the appropriate treatment.
